About Head & Wheble Funeral Directors
Based in Bournemouth, we are well-established and respected, independent, family funeral directors (fourth generation) offering personal and caring funeral services across the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch area.
What is a Direct Cremation?
The fundamental difference between a standard cremation and a Direct Cremation is that at a Direct Cremation no mourners are present. In addition, every aspect of the cremation service is arranged by the Funeral Directors. In a nutshell, we, Head & Wheble, take care of everything, including:
- Collecting the deceased body
- Preparing the coffin
- Arranging the cremation at the local crematorium
- Organising the hearse and bearers
- Scattering of Ashes in the Garden of Remembrance or Returning the ashes to a loved one*
Direct Cremations during Coronavirus Pandemic
In these particularly challenging times, organising a funeral for your loved-one has been even more of a difficult task, with delays, restrictions on the number of mourners and strict procedural changes. Choosing a Direct Cremation provides the comfort and reassurance that your loved-one receives the respect and care they deserve, at the same time alleviating you of the difficult choices that have to be made, preparing for and attending a funeral service.
There are presently more and more people opting for a Direct Cremation, not only because of the reduced cost implications and safety issues, but also because, at a later date, when some time has passed and the current funeral restrictions are lifted, they can arrange a Memorial Service or alternative gathering for their loved-one’s family and friends. This, they feel, is a more fitting option, than a scaled-down funeral service where restrictions have not allowed the service that they or their loved-one would have wanted.
Affordable Direct Cremations from £995
It might also be the case that a Direct Cremation provides the minimal-cost, minimum-fuss solution that you, your family or your loved-one desire. Rest assured, you will get the respect and care that you will always get from Head & Wheble Funeral Directors

*Scattering The Ashes
After a Direct Cremation, you may wish to scatter your loved-one’s ashes. There are a number of points you should consider.
Do you need permission?
In the UK, there’s no explicit law against scattering ashes, as long as you get permission from the person who owns the land, be it private property, a park, beach or churchyard.
The scattering ashes laws & regulations in the UK state that you don’t need permission to scatter ashes on your own land or over a body of water, for example, a river or the sea. But if you decide to scatter the ashes over water please do consider environmental regulations such as:
- not near a fishery or marina
- at least 1km upstream from a water plant or reservoir
- don’t choose a windy day as the ashes may blow on to neighbouring land
Saying Goodbye
You may like to hold a small ceremony around the scattering of ashes. This can offer a treasured moment for you to say some words about your loved one as you scatter the ashes in your chosen location. Of course, this may be followed by a gathering or wake.
